College Ministry Serving Local Lawrence Neighbors

This week, Redeemer Lutheran Church in Lawrence, Kansas, together with our campus ministry and young adult community, the Crimson and Blue Lutheran Crew, had the joy of serving neighbors right here in Lawrence. It was not a flashy project, and that is part of what made it so good. We spent our time doing honest, ordinary work for people who needed a hand, and we were reminded again that Christian love is often expressed in simple, practical ways.

Many in Lawrence know the energy that surrounds KU each fall, especially during the big campus events that fill the town with activity. During that season, our group was assigned a service project, and we were sent to help a wonderful woman named Eileen. That first visit became more than “an assignment.” We met Eileen, listened, worked, and left grateful for the opportunity. We also left with something else, the sense that service done in Christ’s name often opens the door to real relationships.

A few weeks ago, Eileen reached out again. She asked if our group could come back and help once more. Today, we were blessed to say yes. Our crew gathered and spent the time spreading a few dozen bags of mulch for Eileen and her husband. It was steady work, the kind that takes time and teamwork. Bags were hauled, mulch was spread, edges were cleaned up, and little by little the yard took shape. And as we worked, conversation came naturally. That is often how it goes, hands busy, hearts open, neighbors becoming friends.

For Redeemer, campus ministry is never only about events on a calendar. It is about forming students and young adults in the Christian life, worship, prayer, Scripture, friendship, and service. That kind of formation is especially important in a university town, because students are constantly being shaped by what they see and hear. The Church offers something better. The Church offers Christ, His Word, His forgiveness, and a community where faith becomes lived love.

The Crimson and Blue Lutheran Crew exists to give students and young adults a genuine church home while they are in Lawrence. That includes Bible study and fellowship, but it also includes learning the Christian vocation of serving the neighbor. In Lutheran teaching, good works do not earn God’s favor. They flow from God’s favor already given in Christ. We serve because Christ has first served us, and we love because He has first loved us.

This project with Eileen was also a fitting way to end our year together. There is something beautiful about closing a season of campus life not only with memories, but with mercy. Not only with social events, but with service. Not only with talk, but with tangible help offered to a neighbor. It reminds our students that faith is not compartmentalized. It belongs to the whole life.
