Come to Church in Lawrence this Sunday at Redeemer

On the Second Sunday in Lent, the Church prays, “Remember Your mercies, O Lord.” That ancient cry, traditionally called Reminiscere, is not sentimental. It is faithful. Lent teaches us to speak honestly about sin and weakness, yet it also teaches us where to place our hope. We do not appeal to our own strength, resolve, or improvement. We appeal to the Lord’s steadfast love, revealed in Jesus Christ.

Redeemer Lutheran Church in Lawrence, Kansas invites you to join us this Sunday as we gather for the Divine Service, the Church’s historic pattern of worship in which God serves us with His gifts. In this service, we hear the Scriptures, confess our sins, receive absolution, pray, sing, and are strengthened by the Lord’s promises. Lent is often described as a season of repentance, and rightly so, but repentance is never mere self focus. True repentance is turning from ourselves to Christ, who does not despise the broken heart, and who does not send away those who come to Him.

The appointed readings for Lent Two are both bracing and deeply comforting. In Genesis 32, Jacob wrestles through the night and will not let go until he receives a blessing. That is a vivid picture of faithful prayer, not elegant, not polished, yet stubbornly clinging to the Lord. In Matthew 15, the Canaanite woman presses her plea before Jesus with humble confidence, even when the conversation seems to close doors. Her faith is not a vague optimism, it is trust in the mercy that she believes is truly in Him. And in First Thessalonians 4, the apostle urges Christians to walk in sanctification, not as a performance for God, but as a life shaped by the holy calling we have received.

These texts are not chosen at random. They teach us what Lent is for, a renewed grip on Christ, a clearer confession of sin, and a deeper confidence that the Lord’s mercy is greater than our distress.

At Redeemer, Bible Study and Sunday School begin at 9:00 am, followed by the Divine Service at 10:00 am. If you are new, you will be welcomed without pressure or awkwardness. If you carry questions, bring them. If you carry burdens, bring those too. Come pray with us, hear the Word with us, and begin your week where strength is actually given, in the mercies of God.
