Join the June Food Barrel Drive in Lawrence, KS

Redeemer Lutheran Church in Lawrence, Kansas invites members, friends, students, and neighbors to take part in our June Food Barrel collection. This month’s focus items are cereal and canned meat, two practical pantry staples that can help bless households in our local community. Food collection is a simple but meaningful way to love the neighbor whom God has placed near us.

Christian mercy is not abstract. It is often as ordinary as bringing a box of cereal, a can of tuna, canned chicken, canned ham, or another shelf stable meat item and placing it in the Food Barrel. These gifts may seem small on their own, but when the congregation gathers them together, they become a tangible expression of care for families and individuals in Lawrence and Douglas County.

Redeemer’s Food Barrel efforts also connect us with the important work of Just Food, located at 1000 East 11th Street in Lawrence, Kansas. Just Food’s stated mission is to end hunger in the community by increasing access to healthy foods, reducing barriers to health and well-being, and cultivating self-sufficiency. Their site also notes that 19,000 people in Douglas County are at risk of hunger, which reminds us that this need is not far away, it is right here in our own community.

For those with home grown food, the request is to take those items directly to Just Food at 1000 East 11th, Lawrence, KS. This helps fresh food get where it needs to go in a timely and useful way. Just Food describes its work as a community effort involving businesses, organizations, schools, volunteers, local government, and individuals working together to address gaps in the local food system.

As a Lutheran Church in Lawrence, Redeemer understands works of mercy as flowing from the Gospel. We do not serve in order to earn God’s love. We serve because Christ has first loved us, forgiven us, and sent us to care for the neighbor in body and soul.

If you are searching for churches in Lawrence KS, or looking for a church in Lawrence KS where faith is confessed in worship and lived out in mercy, we warmly invite you to visit Redeemer. Bring cereal or canned meat for the June Food Barrel, pray for those facing food insecurity, and join us in caring for our neighbors with glad and generous hearts.
